A long over-due mini-update!

Hello friends.  Sorry to fall off the face of the earth there for a bit.  I have some good excuses -- I've been helping to launch a new business for my employer,  I've finished work on my bands next album, and of course I have my adorable family with whom I try to spend a little bit of time.  Oh, and I also play a fair amount of golf.  Poorly.

Not to bury the lede [sic], recent bloodwork (last week) shows that I remain squeaky clean.  So that's good!

I will post something more detailed on my decision as to where to be treated in the coming weeks, but as of now I think I'm going to return to UAMS per schedule, but go to Mt. Sinai in NYC in January as a second opinion at this stage in my treatment so that I can get the perspective of Dr. Barlogie and see his new location.  I don't think it's possible for me to choose one or the other until I see the center in New York and assess the degree to which BB can continue to monitor and treat me in the manner that he did at UAMS.  Meanwhile, I do have a tremendous sense of continuity with his former colleagues in Little Rock to consider.

It's a high class problem, seven years after diagnosis, to be around mulling this over!

I've been traveling a lot for work and I'm not sure if I'll have time to update before I get all my appointments scheduled, but that should happen before the end of the year (it certainly BETTER as I'm planning to see them both in January) and I will update again at that time, or earlier if events merit.

Happy holidays in advance to all of you!

  3. Good to hear from you. I too have considered following Bart to Mt. Sinai, however NYC is very expensive and with possible stem cell transplant and time there it would be cost prohibitive. I have always received great care in LR and have great confidence in Dr. Z
Hope all remains clear for you....and keep up the good research , a lot of us rely on it and enjoy your insights. Damn Good pies, by the way is a great pizza!!!

  4. My strategy will be to visit NYC for my next visit with Dr. B. (I've been CR and MRD negative since 2009 and am on yearly visits) this coming summer. If I don't like the set up I will either revert to LR or do something local. I agree about the expense of NYC but for me the air fare will be much cheaper and that should offset some (but probably not all) of the increase. We'll see how it goes.

  5. Thanks for the update Nick. I decided to follow up with Dr. B at Mt. Sinai, saw him two weeks ago. It's quite different from LR for sure...but it was a great visit. NY is more convenient for me in terms of travel and after worrying about a slow rise in my light chain number over the past few months I realized I wanted his opinion first and foremost. Results take a little longer to return (as they send samples out for MRD and gene array), but overall I was pleased. The biggest surprise was when Dr. Jagannath performed my BMB. :)

    1. Hi Jody - would you mind telling us how the experience was different from LR? Did you find the experience to be overall positive? Does Dr. B seem to have access to the same level of resources as at LR? Thanks!
